We just passed the hottest holiday shopping season with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Did you buy anything for yourself? Were you debating whether to buy something or not? There are so many ads with blockbuster sales that it’s hard not to buy things you want. How did you deal with that holiday shopping itch?

I’m a tech guy and deals on tech always catches my eye. Whether it’s new computers, phones, tablets, smart watches, cameras, or other gadgets, if there’s a sale or a catchy ad I get hooked. But guess what? I didn’t buy anything that I didn’t need. Do I need to upgrade? Do I need the latest gadgets?

After days of going back and forth I ultimately decided not to buy anything. Trust me it was a back and forth mental  battle for me. Tech always go down in value very quick. There’s always a new version coming out making the version you have outdated.

Was it a want or need? Most things that catch my eyes are wants. Will my life be impacted if I don’t have that item? For me it was a no.

Will it satisfy me temporarily or long term? Things I was eyeing on probably will temporarily satisfy my shopping itch. After a while, will I still be using the item? For me it was a no. 

Am I able to use what I currently have? Everything I had an itch to buy I already have something comparable. Do I buy that new action camera when I already have one? Do I need the latest specs? For me it was a no.

If you fall for that shopping itch and regret buying it, always look to see if returning is an option. Be on the lookout for the return policy. There could be a time limit for returns.

Shopping for others during the holidays and for other occasions is a no brainer. Shopping for myself is a battle. I am definitely harder on myself when it comes to spending on myself. This definitely helps fight that holiday shopping itch especially when there’s a good sale keeping you from spending your money on excess things.
