You probably have heard the saying Every Penny Counts or A Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned but a penny is so little. How can a penny these days make a difference? Well, the saying emphasizes that even the smallest amount is important. Have you ever looked at your grocery receipt and said I thought this item was on sale or was cheaper than what it rung up for? Did you ever experience not getting the special that was advertised? Have you bought something and thought it was 50 cents or a dollar more expensive than you thought and just said it’s ok, it’s not that big of a deal? Let me tell you, every penny counts!
I’ve gone to the grocery store, checked out, looked at my receipt, and went to the customer service desk to question the cost of an item or items. Most times, I was right and they would give me the difference. Was it a hassle? Of course! But in my mind, every penny counts! Some might say that it’s only 50 cents or something minimal, and say it’s not worth the hassle. But I say, every penny counts!
My daughter went to Starbucks one day because they had a Buy One Get One offer. I told her to get one for her and her brother. She comes back home with just one and I ask where’s the second one? She says that the cashier rang it up and no deal so she just got one. I said did you use your app and show them the BOGO deal? She says no. I tell her to go back and get the second one because it’s an offer that should be honored. Luckily Starbucks is walking distance. The lesson for her is to not be intimidated when it comes to your money and that every penny you have counts.
I don’t see saving a penny as being greedy or even embarrassing. I see saving a penny as your right. The savings are there for you especially when there’s a deal. Keep a lookout for the deals especially on things where prices fluctuate. Check out how I shop for deals here. I can’t tell you how many times I canceled a car rental and re-booked it because the cost decreased. A penny may not seem like a lot but in the long run, those pennies that you saved will add up and help you towards financial independence.
