Savings tips while traveling abroad

Traveling abroad is an exciting adventure. Once you finalize your logistics, now it’s time to focus on the trip. As you start planning, you may not realize how much things start to add up. Excursions, tours, special restaurants, and anything else you are interested spending on will add up. I am currently traveling abroad and these are savings tips I’ve used while traveling abroad.
Tax refund
Certain countries will give you the money you paid for taxes on certain purchases back to you. When purchasing certain items and if it qualifies for a tax refund, you should get a receipt saying so. Take this receipt to the airport of the country you purchased the items from. There should be a desk to process your tax refund and give you that money back. This is advantageous when you make big purchases that has a high tax cost. For example, a high end purse could be less expensive than your native country and on top of that recoup the taxes you paid. Win-win situation.
No foreign transaction fees
Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Be careful though because depending on your credit card, there may be foreign transaction fees. When traveling abroad, make sure you only use credit cards that have no foreign transaction fees.
Take public transportation
In countries where public transportation is preferred, it will likely be cost effective to get around by also taking public transportation. In some countries, it is inconvenient to drive. Congestion in big cities such as Tokyo is difficult to get around by a car.
Travel during strong currency conversion
If possible travel during when your currency is strong compared to the destination. When you make purchases in a different country, you will get charged in their currency. If you travel to Japan you will get charged in Yen. As of writing this, one IS dollar is approximately worth 160 Yen which is good for the one with the US dollar. You have more purchasing power.
Cook some meals
If you get tired of eating out every meal and you have a kitchen or access to one, try cooking a meal. Find a market, get some groceries, and cool a meal or two. After a while of eating out, this could be a good change of pace. Plus, it could be cheaper to cook than eating out.
Read travel boards
Keeping up with the latest information on your destination will help you plan your itinerary. What you want to see, what to eat, where to visit, and so on. Trends change each day. Content creators are posting everyday on their travel experiences. Keep an eye on reviews, latest trends, what others recommend or don’t recommend, etc.
