Health is just as important

Health is just as important

When you’re young you feel invincible. Nothing can get in your way. You’re young, strong, agile, flexible, and time is on your side. In a blink you’re 20 years old. Another blink you’re 30, then 40, and then 50. Along the way you’ve assumed more responsibilities, maybe started a family, promoted to management at work, became a care taker, volunteered, and so on. Through these decades will you be just as responsible with your health? We put so much effort into things that we feel will make us succeed such as the career ladder. You build wealth but what good is wealth if you can’t enjoy it. Don’t forget about your health because health is just as important.

You probably know people who have health problems. Some might even be young with health problems. Is their health preventing them from doing certain things or pursuing certain goals? Even if you have an enormous amount of money, are you not able to do things because of a health condition? We might know some folks in this position. It might even be you.

My financial journey has been primarily focused on the financial aspects: investing, saving, reduce spending, real estate, and others. I’ve climbed the career ladder. I have a home, cars, a family, and even a dog. What good is all this if I can’t enjoy it because of my health?

My health isn’t the greatest which is all the more relevant this is. I want to travel more. I want to explore and do adventurous things. I want to live abroad. I’m in my 50’s. Here’s what’s on my mind these days.

  • When is my next doctor’s appointment?
  • Which doctor should I go see?
  • How many more doctors should I see?
  • Why isn’t my health insurance covering my health costs entirely?
  • Why are my joints hurting?
  • Why are my knees starting to hurt?
  • Why is my body sore?
  • Why am I always tired?
  • How can I travel long term because I need to see my doctors?

Not the things I want to float in my mind. I’d rather be saying where is my next vacation going to be or I’d love to be able to do that.

When you’re young, health is probably not the priority because you don’t have any issues. But if you don’t take care of yourself, there’s a good chance that you will have issues later on. If your health is preventing you from doing certain things it doesn’t matter how much money you have.

If I had put health as a priority in my life, I wouldn’t be in the deteriorated state that I’m in now. My concern is that later on I won’t be able to spend the money I’ve built in my financial portfolio because I won’t be able to do the things I was dreaming of when younger. What good is your money when you can’t spend it or you’re spending it on something else that you didn’t expect such as doctors, medications, medical services, and hospital visits.

Take care of your health early and consistently. Maintain a healthy lifestyle while building towards financial independence. It’s not enjoyable when you can’t spend your money on things you can’t enjoy. Health is just as important as your wealth.
